Care Free Black Girl?
Define a care free black girl.
Can a black girl be Care Free?
Are we born with that privilege?
These are just a few of the questions we hope to explore.
2015 for us, was a year of adventures, self exploration and freedom. My sister and I wandered around the world care free, hopping off and on planes, trains, lyft’s, bicycles etc.
We spent a majority of our time applying for new opportunities and exploring. Whatever we felt like doing, where ever we felt like going, we packed our bags and went. We felt LIMITLESS! By refusing to be tied down to societal standards, we challenged the traditional expectations for black women of our age.
At the start of the New Year, everything changed. We entered the New Year with new perspectives that caused us to revamp our goals, resolutions, and 3-to-5 year plans. However, we had not realized our dreams had consequences until they began to come into fruition.
Consequently, the care free black girls in us have been forced by life to care about…
Responsible Dating /Marriage
Faith/Spirituality
Higher Education
Home ownership/Relocation
Income/Finances
Careers (with benefits)
Saving Up/Investments
Children
Friendship/ #SquadGoals
With time we’ve learned that there are consequences to being carefree. The worries and responsibilities of the world are the things that turn carefree black girls like us into women.
This is how we began to analyze our transition:
- Questioning if we made the right decisions in college.
- Looking for jobs with salary, benefits and healthcare.
- Taking the risks and sacrifices that come along with being an entrepreneur.
- Analyzing friendships and the types of men we have dated.
- Reflecting on how many of our friends are dating, engaged or married.
And the list goes on and on…
Analytical thoughts like these are what have propelled us into womanhood. As we’ve been riding our bikes and exploring new lands we never really stopped to look back or worry about serious matters to this extent.
Sooner or later…
Life catches up with you
& Life caught up with us.
When you are a girl, time does not apply to you. But when you are a woman every decision counts and you can’t afford to spend a day just wandering around in your mind or roaming around an unknown city simply for the fun of it.
Usually, the notion of someone being carefree is associated with a lack thereof responsibility or sense of detachment in order to find oneself. Sooner or later life will force you to make permanent decisions, important decisions that you didn’t have to worry about when you were younger.
Maybe a care free black girl is just that…a girl naive of the weight of the world. Yet this naivety is what allows her to live freely without carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.
Never lose the care free black girl in you, take her with you to your next business meeting, date or vacation. We may be women now, but we hope to never lose the” care free black girls” in us.

Wow! Such great points brought up. I never looked at being a care free black girl in the context that you guys presented. Although I was open to being “carefree”, I thought that it was kind of an either/or situation. Either you are “carefree” or you worry about everything! So true that being carefree doesn’t mean neglecting your responsibilities. It means recognizing that life is too short to be a slave to these obligations. Get things done, and enjoy life. What an amazing outlook. Great read. God bless you both in all of your endeavors!
