So , I’m currently reading Americanah AGAIN and I couldn’t help but to write this post.
A conversation focused on the idea of a ‘soulmate’ had to be had.
So bare with me as I get this off my chest!
I THINK …
A ‘soulmate’ is possible & can exist for each individual.
BUT …
In order to find a ‘soulmate’ one must be aware of their own soul. It’s wants, it’s needs, and what completes it.
I truly do believe their is someone out there for everyone and that God has designed someone special for each of us. However, love is just the first step. Anyone can find love , simply because it lives in each of us ….so it is not hard for any of us to share it. But, just because you are in love and think you love someone more than yourself does not necessarily mean this person is your ‘soulmate’.
The perfect person can be in your life and pass you by if you are not conscious and aware of your own soul. The love you receive and accept in this world is based on the love you put out, timing and how you nurture your soul. If you are prepared and can handle it, the universe will fill you up and provide you with what you need. If you are not spiritually ready it usually you lessens the chances of being blessed. People like this tend to settle for less by default. Just like Ifemelu’s character did to Obinze in Americanah. This is what the I refer to as ” the product of free will”. We all have option to choose who ever we want but there are consequences for our actions No matter our decision our soul is always present for each encounter so we must be careful for who we share it with.
If we spend too much time ignoring our problems and not feeding our soul ,Mr. Right will drive right past us without any sign.
A ‘soulmate’ is a once in a life time experience. A priceless union of two people creating on entity. However, even if you are blessed enough to meet your ‘soulmate’ at a young age, your stories will never align properly if both partners are not fully conscious of their own souls.
A ‘soulmate’ is deeper than the concept of love. It has more to do with serendipity and how our use of “free will” can change our destiny. We have the power to attract or reject our own happiness and ultimately our very own ‘soulmate’ .
I refuse to believe that finding the perfect ‘soulmate’ should be based on if we love the same…
- songs
- books
- plays
- artists
- clothes
- sports
or if we can finish each others sentences .etc……
The reality of it all is , unlike the movies … when you finally meet ..your favorite songs wont start playing and chances are everything he says wont be perfect . Its up to use your discernment and trust your gut instincts.Allow yourself to let go of your baggage and be in the right place at the right time.
Ultimately, the key point finding ones ‘soulmate’ is awareness of your own soul .

I always roll my eyes when individuals claim they’ve found their soulmate based on basic similarities. They forget that our souls are comprised of the emotional, physical and mental entities that make us, us. Half of us are on a journey to heal, accept or find out who we are yet we are so comfortable throwing the word “soulmate” around.
You couldn’t have said it any better! Most of us, we forget that “soulmate” means sharing, caring, loving but also to be loved. It takes two to tango and if one has not figured out what and why their heart beat in that relationship, why there’s universal and spiritual love and loving, then it’s not about being soulmates. But then again, we live in a very “fast” world, so it’s difficult to realise and experience the fullness of love as we’d like to experience it.
Hefty A+ for the catchy title, Americanna is one of my favourite books.
Just found your blog, the overall look and content screams “well-thought-out chic” and with a steely, perfectly mascarra-ed gaze.
Well done!
Haha thanks doll! Yes, Americanh has inspired numerous aspects of our lives. Your designs are beautiful btw.;)
This is a great post! I love the way you put your thoughts down Nkemlife and yes, you couldn’t have used a better book! I adore Americanah and I think the way love is portrayed in there is the essence of what and how love is supposed to be, from personal to universal to spiritual, a love that goes beyond time and distance, a love that truly recognises itself when it appears.
