This past week Chidinma Dureke (One half of Nkem Life) was featured in the very first #AFROxTRAP. The creative minds behind Sickerthanyouravg and AfriTribe came together to give birth #AFROxTRAP.
#AFROxTRAP was nothing but good vibes. The fusion of Hip hop and African culture left everyone in the room inspired to embrace both cultures. The event took place at Nomad Yard Collectiv, a chic vintage clothing store during the day and a DC socialite hot spot at night.
Originally we arrived at the event not knowing what to except. .The night truly did meet to our expectations.
Seemingly, #AFROxTRAP attracted 3 different types of people:
- People who embrace African culture
- People who love Trap Music
- People who identify as hybrid African-American’s who embraced both cultures
#AFROxTRAP had featured visual artists, musical performances (rapper and singers) all in a space curated to produce that Afro-American vibe.
Through out the night people were able to relax, drink ju-ju juice, eat jollof rice , observe the beautiful paintings and photography as we all vibed out to the different music.
We could sense that all those people at the event like my sister and I, who are also products of two dominant cultures, would leave the left feeling satisfied and proud of who they are.
My sister and I left with a better understanding of who we are. We were encouraged to remember that it’s okay to like both Fela and Future, but most importantly it is okay to be both African and American.
Overall, we enjoyed ourselves at #AFROxTRAP. We think the idea is brilliant and can’t wait to see what’s next.
Who knows #AFROxTRAP could even be the next #AFROPUNK?
This event could possibly help American’s gain insight into Africa’s rich culture, by helping to shed-light on our generations African/American experience.
