Yesterday as I was cleaning and organizing clothes in my room, I noticed that…
ONE: I buy a lot of the same clothes
TWO: I basically purchase the same style of boyfriends jeans over & over again.
The thought of this instantly made me burst into laughter. LOL
It’s crazy how we can go shopping looking for something different and end up buying the same thing(s) . Even though we swore to ourselves, the last time we went shopping, we would step outside of our comfort zone & get something different.
As I began to fold and hang up my jeans, I couldn’t help but make the correlation between my jean buying patterns and my dating patterns.
I had an epiphany and realized , all of my past boyfriends have similar GENES . The manner in which I try to pick out the perfect jeans to wear is the same approach I use in picking out the perfect genes in my significant others. Iv’e found there is a parallel connection in my need for familiarity in what I know will work. But what I wasn’t aware of was my need to be familiar with a stranger I decided to date.
Ironically every time we go shopping we end up looking for the same patterns in our significant others . We search for the brand we know and trust. Once we buy the pair and begin to wear it around, we want to know that we can feel comfortable in it. We don’t ever want to feel like after we pick out the perfect genes we now have to return them for someone else to try on.
When most of us go shopping we keep our eyes out for the perfect feel. The pair of genes that just feel right against our bodies. We usually don’t buy it unless it comes in our perfect size. We want to feel like it was made just for us. We prefer for the genes to be flexible and be able to bend in the direction we want to go. Just like when were searching for the perfect boyfriend. We all typically have a generic list of attributes that make the perfect boyfriend for us .
Every girl has their favorite pair of genes, the one you know you can pull out for any occasion and it always come through for you .
- ” Guuurrl where you get’dem genes from?” (As in, Where the HELL did you find him at ?)
- “I want a pair ! ” ( As in, I wish I had a man like that )
- “You think they will have my size ? ( As in ,do you think he has a brother or a friend ?) LOL
The truth is , we only wear the genes because we know we can depend on it & know what it’s capable of .
By simply trying to organize my closet, I found that each of my past relationships may have ended differently but each guy began from common grounds. Although each guy had different names and had different backgrounds, they each had to be able to fit me like the perfect pair of jeans. They also each had to be able to be flexible with who I was.
Like any body who suffers from buyers remorse , whenever the genes started to feel to tight or I felt like I was out growing them , I would be ready to return them for something different. But the sad reality of it all is , I would end up buying the same type of boy-friend genes without even being aware of it. I would subconsciously pick out the same pair of genes but thought it would fit differently because it seemed to come in a different shade or had an unique rip above the knee that made it stand out.
At the end of the day, the only way to break a pattern is to change you. So for 2015, I think I am going to stop looking for new pair of genes. I know the perfect pair is out there waiting for me but I might just have to lose little bit of emotional weight before I can begin to try them on.

*long sigh**
This was so beautifully written… and i’m literally just sitting here reading my memoir.
I once found my self buying the same type of ‘genes’ at some point .. I guess I was infatuated with the loose & comfort fit of those boyfriend genes (a.k.a no strings attached lol).. but somehow I found a pair that was although a bit baggy at first, eventually grew on me & now its the perfect fit =)
Hope you find the same…or better yet, I hope the fit finds you..
Awww, that is so kind of you. Thank you sis! Hold on to your genes my love , God has made that pair JUST for you !!
I needed this.
