Recently, one of my sorority sisters invited me out for community service with her organization , Service Angels . I was beyond excited to be able to go and give back to the community . I had no idea what we would be doing but with my prior knowledge of Service Angels, I knew it would be more than worth my time.
That morning we all met up at in D.C at a beautiful church named the Universalist National Memorial Church on 1810 16th St NW DC. When we walked in the Church I saw a couple of friendly faces waiting for us with ( Food for all DC) shirts on. One gentlemen named Graeme, welcomed us with open arms and made us feel like there was no where else to be at that very moment. I instantly knew that I was in the right place at the right time.
After we signed in we drank some free coffee and waited for a little more people to arrive. Before we began work, Graeme gave us a little background history about their organization. before we began . They started right on time after their introduction speech. I could tell just by the mood in the room, that this was a very organized group that took their purpose seriously .
The fellow volunteers and I learned that Food for all DC has fed the residents of DC every Saturday , for 20 years since 1984. Food for all DC is ran by federal grants and they receive their food from food banks mostly. People who receive food from Food for all DC have to be identified as home bound and official residents of DC.
There is an evident level of respect for the people they are serving. Organizers and volunteers must refer to the people they assist as clients . The food is personally hand packaged and dropped off to each clients house. If the client is not home, a note must be left alongside with the food at the clients front door. The high spirits of Graeme and his teammates helped reassure us volunteers that Food for all DC goes above and beyond to serve its clients and resident of DC who are in need for food. FOOD FOR ALL DC really cares.
Besides the federal assistance, everything else is purely ran by volunteers. Volunteers package the food and distribute it in an assembly line manner. The food is packaged into volunteers cars individually. No many is provided to volunteers to cover expenses like gas and transportation, so each person is really donating their personal time and money.
It was a great experience that allowed me to give back . Severing with Food for all DC allowed me to remember how essential it is give as much as you gain. I’m so grateful Service Angels gave me a chance to be apart of something so powerful.
If you are interesting in serving with Food for all DC, there are several ways to volunteer with them . Food for all DC allows people to donate money, or buy a Food for all DC t-shirt as a fundraiser method. You can also do a food drive and donate food you collect to Food for all DC . Any effort is appreciated and accepted .
My advice to all is to find a organization you like or believe in and serve with them; humanity needs you.
